FULLY FUNDED: Apply For The UNU-WIDER/African Union Winter School on Public Finance 2026 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)

Applications are open for the UNU-WIDER/African Union Winter School on Public Finance 2026. Organized jointly by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) and the African Union, this prestigious programme is designed to equip African policy analysts and researchers with practical skills in applied public economics and quantitative public finance analysis. The course combines online and in-person learning, allowing participants to engage with leading experts while strengthening their ability to produce policy-relevant research that contributes to development across Africa.  

The programme will be delivered in two phases. The first phase is a three-day online methods workshop scheduled for 28–30 July 2026. The second phase is a one-week in-person winter school hosted by the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 14–18 September 2026. Participants will explore key topics such as public finance and development, taxation, tax evasion and enforcement, informality, redistribution, social protection, empirical methods, data analysis, and the application of artificial intelligence in policy research.

Successful applicants will receive financial assistance covering travel expenses, accommodation, and most meals during their stay in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Participants will benefit from lectures delivered by UNU-WIDER researchers and internationally recognized experts, practical training in quantitative public finance analysis, networking opportunities with policymakers and researchers from across Africa, and exposure to evidence-based approaches to fiscal policy and development challenges. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the SOUTHMOD at 10 celebration, featuring keynote addresses and panel discussions on domestic revenue mobilization and public finance.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should be researchers and analysts working in ministries, revenue authorities, government agencies, universities, and research institutes across Africa. The programme is intended for individuals interested in strengthening their expertise in public finance, taxation, and development economics. Participants are expected to have an interest in quantitative analysis and policy-relevant research. Applications from suitably qualified early-career female researchers are particularly encouraged. Applicants should be prepared to participate fully in both the online and in-person components of the programme. Successful participants are also expected to use their own laptops and actively engage in lectures, practical exercises, and discussions throughout the course.
