Applications are now open for the Young Women for Biosecurity Fellowship 2025, an initiative of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). This fully funded fellowship is a special edition of the Youth for Biosecurity Fellowship Programme and is designed to empower female scientists from the Global South. It aims to strengthen capacity, build networks, and provide opportunities for young women to actively contribute to global discussions on biosafety and biosecurity in the framework of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), which marks its 50th anniversary in 2025.

Program Benefits
The fellowship runs over three months and includes a blend of virtual and in-person activities. Fellows will participate in online biosecurity workshops in October and November 2025, gaining insight into global challenges, policy, and scientific developments. They will also benefit from mentorship and networking opportunities with experts in the field. The highlight of the fellowship is a five-day fully funded field visit to Geneva from 8–12 December 2025, where fellows will attend the Seventh Meeting of the BWC Working Group on the Strengthening of the Convention, engage with diplomats and policymakers, and contribute to advancing biosecurity discussions on the international stage.
Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open to women under the age of 35 who are citizens of BWC State Parties in least developed, low-income, or lower/upper-middle-income countries as classified by the OECD DAC list. Applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree in life sciences or a related discipline from a recognized institution and have a minimum of three years’ professional experience in the field. They should currently be working in a relevant area such as laboratories, research in biosecurity or disarmament, or emerging technologies. Proficiency in English is required, along with the ability to commit fully to the fellowship activities. A reference letter, passport copy, and confirmation of availability are also required.
