Course Summary ; This hands-on, full-day learning experience is crafted to equip participants with a foundational understanding of net zero carbon concepts, the urgent global need to reduce emissions, and how individuals and workplaces contribute to both the problem and the solution.
Participants will learn how to assess and take action to reduce their carbon impact in both personal and professional contexts.
Topics Covered
The session explores:
- Primary sources and effects of carbon and other greenhouse gases
- Definitions of key climate-related terms, including net zero, carbon footprint, offsetting, and carbon capture
- The dual responsibility of individuals and organizations in driving and mitigating carbon emissions
- Practical guidance and digital tools to measure and lower one's carbon footprint
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand how personal choices and workplace behaviors contribute to carbon emissions
- Recognize strategies for reducing environmental impact
- Gain confidence in using online tools to calculate and manage their carbon footprint

Recognition and Certification
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion. Additionally, they’ll be given the option to pursue formal recognition as Carbon Literate through an application process reviewed by the independent Carbon Literacy Project. This masterclass is offered free of charge to eligible learners, supported through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council under the Higher Skills Accelerator programme.
The course is open to residents of Stoke-on-Trent (those paying council tax to the local authority), aged 18 or older, who meet any of the following criteria:
Currently employed (full-time, part-time, or temporarily absent from work)
On fixed-term or agency contracts
Self-employed
Participating in government-supported work or training programs
On parental leave
