The North-South Centre (NSC) of the Council of Europe, in collaboration with the European Union and key regional partners, is inviting applications for the HEY (Human Rights Education for Youth) Online Course: "Towards Responsible, Safe, Inclusive and Ethical Sport." This training opportunity is open to young leaders aged 18–30 who are passionate about human rights and actively engaged in the field of sport or youth empowerment across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

About the Course

The course explores the intersection of sport and human rights, addressing key issues such as inclusivity, integrity, governance, ethics, and the role of sport in advancing peace, well-being, and social cohesion. It is part of the South Programme V – a joint EU-Council of Europe initiative that supports human rights, democratic values, and rule of law in the Southern Mediterranean.

Developed with partners including EPAS, the African Union Sports Council, and OIF, this online course is designed to empower youth to become active promoters of ethical practices in sports and beyond.

πŸ“Œ What Participants Will Gain

  • In-depth knowledge of human rights frameworks related to sport.
  • Practical tools for ethical sport governance and youth advocacy.
  • Insights into global and regional sport ecosystems and actors.
  • A certificate upon completion (80% course participation required).

🧠 Course Topics Include:

  • Sport and human rights: legal instruments and values.
  • Stakeholders and governance structures in sport.
  • Integrity issues: discrimination, abuse, corruption, and doping.
  • Practical tools for activism and awareness-raising.

Follow-Up Opportunities

Graduates of the course may apply for an in-person Tutor Training (ToT), leading to certification as a HEY tutor. Selected tutors will be supported by the NSC to replicate training in their communities. Other networking and funding opportunities may follow.

  • Active engagement in youth, sport, or human rights initiatives.
  • Motivation to promote ethical, safe, and inclusive sports practices.
  • Commitment to completing the course and engaging with peers.
  • Gender and geographic balance will be considered.

Note: Fluency in French is required.
