FULLY FUNDED TO EGYPT : Apply for the ISA-Egypt Training Programme 2026 on Regional Environmental Management Planning in the Indian Ocean
Applications are open for the 2026 ISA–Egypt Joint Training and Research Centre (ISA-Egypt JTRC) Training Programme on the scientific and technical dimensions of Regional Environmental Management Plans (REMPs). The fully funded program will be held in Alexandria, Egypt, from 20–24 September 2026.
Organized by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in collaboration with the ISA–Egypt Joint Training and Research Centre, the initiative aims to strengthen the skills and expertise of professionals and researchers involved in marine science, biodiversity conservation, environmental planning, and ocean governance.
About the Programme
Regional Environmental Management Plans (REMPs) play a critical role in protecting marine ecosystems and supporting sustainable management of activities in international seabed areas. This training programme has been developed to help participants better understand the scientific principles, analytical tools, and policy frameworks that guide the design, implementation, and review of REMPs.
The programme combines online learning with an intensive in-person workshop, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
Programme Objectives
Participants will gain opportunities to:
- Strengthen their capacity to contribute to environmental planning and management processes.
- Understand scientific methods and technical tools used in the development of REMPs.
- Explore best practices and case studies from different ocean regions.
- Enhance cooperation among scientists, policymakers, and environmental professionals.
- Promote inclusive participation in marine science, particularly among women and early-career professionals.
Training Structure
Online Learning Phase
Selected participants will first complete a one-month self-paced online course through ISA’s Deep Dive e-learning platform. The course will introduce participants to environmental management planning concepts, policy frameworks, and scientific methodologies.
In-Person Workshop
The face-to-face training will take place from 20–24 September 2026 in Alexandria, Egypt and will include:
- Practical laboratory and analytical training
- Sessions on environmental planning techniques and methodologies
- Regional case studies from the Indian Ocean, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and Northwest Pacific
- Laboratory visits at the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF)
- Lectures from leading marine scientists and experts
- Discussions with ISA Secretariat representatives, Legal and Technical Commission members, and partner institutions
- Peer learning and knowledge-sharing activities
Completion of the online training phase is required before attending the workshop in Egypt.
Special consideration will be given to women applicants and early- to mid-career professionals.
