The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) has opened applications for the 2026/2027 Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme. This initiative offers doctoral candidates the chance to spend time at UNU-WIDER, where they can access the institute’s resources and work closely with its team of researchers. The fellowship is designed for those whose doctoral projects focus on issues affecting developing economies, allowing them to strengthen their research through academic collaboration and institutional support.

Successful fellows usually remain in residence at UNU-WIDER for three continuous months before returning to their own universities. While at the institute, participants are expected to draft one or more academic papers and share their findings through a seminar presentation. In some cases, fellows may also get the opportunity to publish their work in the WIDER Working Paper Series, further extending the reach of their research.

Applicants must already be enrolled in a PhD programme and be able to demonstrate strong potential in conducting research relevant to developing countries. While scholars from other social sciences may also apply, it is important to note that UNU-WIDER’s primary focus is economics. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is required, along with solid skills in quantitative or qualitative analysis. The programme is particularly encouraging of applications from women, researchers in the early stages of their careers, and those from developing nations. Preference is generally given to candidates who are further along in their PhD journey.

The fellowship is highly competitive, with only a small fraction of applicants being selected each year. Recent statistics show that just about one percent of candidates have been accepted, highlighting the selectivity of the programme.

Those who are chosen to carry out their fellowship in Helsinki receive a package of support. This includes a travel allowance to cover the journey to and from Finland, medical insurance for illness or accidents during their stay, and a monthly stipend of EUR 2,070 to help with living expenses while in Helsinki. However, the fellowship does not provide funding for dependents.
