FULLY FUNDED TO MANCHESTER, U.K: Apply for the Equity and Merit Scholarships for international master’s students

Applications are now open for the Equity and Merit Scholarships, a transformative opportunity aimed at supporting exceptional students from selected countries in the Global South. These scholarships are designed to equip young professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address critical challenges in their home countries, in line with the global pursuit of a more sustainable and equitable future.

They are offering these awards to academically outstanding individuals who would not be able to study at The University of Manchester without financial support. The scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of merit and potential to contribute to development, with a strong emphasis on encouraging women and applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.

There are two study options available: a full-time master’s programme in Manchester lasting one year, and a part-time distance learning option delivered online over three to five years. In total, 30 scholarships are available—20 for on-campus study and 10 for distance learning. Eligible fields include engineering, environment, education, law, health sciences, textiles, and development studies. Applicants must be residents and citizens of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Ethiopia, or Zimbabwe.

The scholarship covers full tuition fees for both study options. For those studying in Manchester, additional support includes return airfare, visa costs, and a living allowance to cover everyday expenses while in the UK.

To be considered, applicants must meet several requirements. They must hold citizenship in one of the six eligible countries and be living there at the time of application. They should not have previously studied outside of Africa, except for short-term training of six months or less. A completed bachelor’s degree with top academic performance is also necessary—typically meaning the applicant was among the top 10% of their graduating class.

A minimum of two years of relevant, paid professional experience is required in the field aligned with the intended course of study. Voluntary roles and unpaid internships do not count. Applicants must also show strong motivation to return home after completing their degree and be able to articulate how their studies in Manchester will help them drive positive change in their country.

The range of available master’s programmes is extensive, including cutting-edge subjects in artificial intelligence, renewable energy, development economics, public health, climate change, global education, international law, and more. Several of these courses are also offered in an online format, allowing students to balance their studies with ongoing work or community commitments.

These scholarships are aimed at those with the passion and vision to help transform their societies. By investing in future leaders, the programme supports sustainable development at both a local and global level.
