FULLY FUNDED TO WASHINGTON D.C : Apply for the Niskanen Summer Institute 2026 – Democracy That Works
The Niskanen Center is inviting motivated undergraduates to apply for its first-ever Niskanen Summer Institute, a fully funded, one-week immersive program designed to unpack the real-world mechanics of policymaking hook.
Taking place in downtown Washington, D.C., from June 8 to June 12, the Institute brings together a small cohort of students who want to explore the intersection of politics, policy, and institutional reform. Participants will gain first-hand exposure to how decisions are shaped in Washington and how thoughtful ideas can influence economic and political outcomes.
What the Program Offers
The Summer Institute combines academic depth with practical insight. Through daily seminars, discussions, and field visits, students will engage directly with Niskanen Center staff, fellows, and policy practitioners who are actively shaping national debates.
Key elements of the program include:
-
Interactive seminars on contemporary policy challenges and political realignments
-
Conversations with policymakers, advocates, and leading thinkers
-
Field visits to Capitol Hill and other major Washington institutions
-
Skills training in government affairs, political communication, research, and policy writing
-
Collaborative discussions and social activities with fellow participants
Topics covered will range from climate and energy policy to immigration, housing, healthcare, state capacity, regulation, and the future of democratic institutions.
The Institute is scheduled ahead of most summer internships, and participation in a D.C.-based internship is not required. For accepted students who need to adjust internship dates, the program team is willing to provide support.
