The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program provides comprehensive financial and professional support for selected scholars. Fellows receive a monthly stipend based on the cost of living at their assigned research location in the United States. The program also covers round-trip airfare, excess baggage allowance for return travel, and visa application expenses.

In addition, scholars receive professional allowances that can be used for books, conferences, seminars, and other academic resources that support their research work. Participants are also provided with settling-in support and primary medical insurance coverage during the grant period. In some cases, dependent allowances and travel support for accompanying dependents may also be available depending on the grant duration and conditions.

Beyond financial support, fellows benefit from access to advanced academic resources, international collaboration opportunities, mentorship from U.S.-based scholars, and participation in the global Fulbright alumni network. The experience helps strengthen academic leadership, research capacity, and institutional partnerships between South Africa and the United States.

Applicants for the Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program must hold a doctorate degree or an equivalent terminal qualification in their field at the time of application. Preference is given to individuals with at least three years of university teaching experience as well as a strong record of scholarly research, teaching, and publications. Candidates are expected to demonstrate academic excellence and the ability to carry out an impactful research project at a U.S. institution.

Eligible applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents who have held permanent residency in South Africa for at least five years. South African nationals who also possess U.S. citizenship are not eligible for the program. Applicants may come from universities, research institutes, or other educational and research-focused institutions.

The scholarship is open to all academic disciplines without regard to gender or age. However, proposals involving clinical medical research that requires patient interaction or patient contact are not permitted under the Fulbright Program guidelines. In addition, applications for doctoral dissertation research, postdoctoral research immediately after completion of a doctorate degree, or general professional travel are considered ineligible.

Applicants should possess strong English language proficiency sufficient to conduct research and collaborate effectively with colleagues in the United States. TOEFL examinations are generally not required, although language ability may be assessed if necessary. Preference is also given to candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright Scholar grant and who have had limited prior experience in the United States.
