Applications are open for the Al Jazeera Media Institute (AJMI) 2026 Fellowship Programmes, an initiative designed to strengthen journalism and media research across the Global South. Through this programme, AJMI aims to contribute to the global effort of advancing media quality, fostering innovation, and encouraging knowledge exchange within the field of journalism.

About the Fellowship

The AJMI Fellowship Programme provides an opportunity for journalists and researchers to engage in both academic and practical learning within the Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN). Fellows will gain firsthand experience working alongside Al Jazeera journalists, editors, and media professionals while developing research that contributes to the evolution of modern journalism.

Objectives

The fellowship seeks to:

• Strengthen high-quality journalism and support media innovation in the Global South.

• Encourage applied research and thought leadership in contemporary journalism.

• Enrich global media content through the exchange of diverse perspectives.

• Provide exposure to Al Jazeera’s newsroom practices, editorial processes, and reporting culture.

Programme Tracks

1. Al Jazeera Fellowship
This programme invites full-time journalists and researchers with a background in media, communications, or social sciences to produce a 7,000-word research paper on a topic related to journalism or media studies.
Successful candidates will:

• Work closely with an assigned team at AJMN.

• Engage with editors and media professionals relevant to their research focus.

• Develop a final research paper offering practical insights for the journalism industry.

Duration: 3 months

• Phase 1 (Remote): Fellows will prepare a research plan and submit the introduction of their paper.

• Phase 2 (In-person at AJMN Headquarters, Doha): Fellows will complete the research and submit their final paper.

2. Visiting Journalist Fellowship
This track is designed for practicing journalists seeking an immersive experience within the Al Jazeera newsroom. The programme will open at a later date, with further details to be announced soon.
