Position Overview

The Managing Editor will lead Mongabay’s English-language environmental coverage across Africa. The role combines editorial leadership, project management, journalist mentorship, and strategic planning to ensure the production of high-quality, impactful journalism.

The editor will supervise a team of reporters and editors, manage reporting projects, coordinate editorial priorities, and contribute to the growth of Mongabay’s network of environmental journalists throughout the continent.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

The selected candidate will:

  • Commission, edit, and publish environmental and conservation stories from across Africa
  • Work closely with reporters and editors to develop compelling news and feature stories
  • Review and evaluate story proposals from staff and freelance contributors
  • Conduct research and background investigations to support reporting projects
  • Ensure all content meets high standards of accuracy, quality, and journalistic integrity
  • Support the production of multimedia content, including photographs, videos, graphics, charts, and maps
  • Manage content publication through digital publishing platforms
  • Strengthen editorial partnerships and collaborations with media organizations

Project and Team Management

The Managing Editor will also:

  • Lead a team of editors and journalists based across Africa
  • Develop editorial plans, reporting schedules, budgets, and project timelines
  • Monitor progress toward editorial objectives and grant-related commitments
  • Facilitate editorial meetings and team coordination
  • Collaborate with global editorial, communications, marketing, and production teams
  • Track the impact of published stories and contribute to reporting requirements

Eligibility Criteria
- At least eight years of professional experience in editorial roles within a news organization

- A minimum of two years of experience managing teams or supervising staff

- Exceptional written and spoken English skills

- Strong knowledge of environmental, climate, conservation, or natural resource issues in Africa

- Experience working in journalism within African contexts

- Excellent editing, writing, and communication abilities
