The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing urgent humanitarian crises worldwide, with a focus on helping the most vulnerable populations. Its mission is inspired by Armenian history, as the initiative was established in honor of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide, and in gratitude to those who saved them. The foundation aims to transform this legacy into a global humanitarian movement.
Eligibility Criteria
For Nominees:
- Nominees can be individuals or groups, provided they meet the following criteria:
- They must be alive (the prize is not awarded posthumously).
- They must not have won the Aurora Prize or been named as Aurora Humanitarians (or finalists) in previous cycles.
- If a group, they must not be a legally established organization.
- They must not have participated in inhumane acts (including war crimes, genocide, terrorism/extremism) and must not hold or publicly endorse extremist views or have been convicted of violent crimes.
- They must not deny crimes against humanity, such as the Holocaust, Armenian Genocide, or other atrocities.
- They must not be employees, officers, or relatives of members of the Secretariat, Selection Committee, Independent Observers, or Foundation staff.
For Nominators:
- Nominators can be individuals or organizations, but self-nominations are not allowed.
- Full contact details must be provided, and anonymous nominations are not accepted.
- If nominating on behalf of an organization, the nominator must provide authorization and may be required to submit a letter of authorization if requested by the Secretariat.
The application deadline is on a rolling basis.
Additional Information
The **Aurora Prize** includes three components totaling **US$1,000,000**, distributed over a maximum of three years:
- **US$300,000** (the “Laureate Direct Award”) will be awarded to the Aurora Prize Laureate.
- **US$600,000** will be allocated in **US$25,000** increments at the discretion of the Laureate (the “Laureate Indirect Award”). The distribution includes:
- A minimum of **US$300,000** to a maximum of **US$600,000** payable to individuals selected from a pre-approved pool of vetted grassroots humanitarians (referred to as “Luminaries”).
- Optionally, up to **US$300,000** can be directed by the Laureate to grassroots humanitarian organizations (referred to as “Designates”), which have been vetted by Aurora.
- **US$100,000** will be shared among the remaining Aurora Humanitarians who did not receive the Laureate Direct Award (the “Finalists”), usually **US$50,000** per finalist (the “Finalists Award”).
