The European Commission has officially opened applications for the prestigious Blue Book Traineeship Programme, offering graduates from around the world the opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience within one of the world’s largest public institutions. The programme is designed for talented graduates who want to develop practical skills while contributing to European policymaking, administration, translation, and international cooperation.

The five-month paid traineeship will run from 1 March to 31 July 2027, with successful applicants placed across European Commission Directorates-General, services, and agencies in Brussels, Luxembourg, and other locations across the European Union. Trainees work alongside experienced professionals, participate in meetings, conduct research, draft reports and policy documents, support project implementation, respond to public enquiries, and, depending on their placement, may also contribute to translation and multilingual communication. 

The Blue Book Programme is open to university graduates from any academic discipline. For the first time, graduates of Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes are also eligible under the programme’s expanded framework. Applicants should have completed at least a three-year higher education qualification (or an eligible VET qualification where applicable), possess strong language skills, and have no more than six weeks of previous professional experience within an EU institution, body, agency, or delegation before the traineeship begins. While the programme primarily targets EU citizens, a limited number of places are available for non-EU nationals. 

Selected trainees receive a competitive monthly living allowance, with the amount varying according to the country of assignment through a cost-of-living adjustment. For example, trainees assigned to Belgium receive approximately €1,572 per month for the March 2027 session. Participants may also receive health insurance, a travel allowance of €275, meal and public transport support where applicable, accommodation support in certain locations, and additional financial assistance for trainees with disabilities. 

The selection process is highly competitive and begins with an online application, followed by eligibility screening and pre-selection. Successful candidates are placed in the Virtual Blue Book, where European Commission departments can review profiles, conduct interviews if required, and make placement offers. Applicants may apply for up to three trainee positions once they reach this stage. 

This traineeship provides an exceptional opportunity to build international experience, expand professional networks, strengthen multilingual and intercultural skills, and gain first-hand insight into how the European Union develops and implements its policies. Many former trainees have gone on to successful careers within EU institutions, international organisations, public administration, consulting, academia, and the private sector.
