Germanwatch, an independent, non-profit organization grounded in scientific research, is seeking a Policy Advisor on Climate Change Adaptation and Loss & Damage (open to all genders). The role, based in either Bonn or Berlin, Germany, will run on a part-time basis (24–32 hours per week), with a start date aimed for 15 September 2025. For over three decades, Germanwatch has been active at both national and international levels, advocating for justice, human rights, and the protection of ecological systems such as the climate, biodiversity, and natural resources. They focus on promoting democratic and constructive policy actions in Germany and the EU and are well-known for building bridges between civil society, government, business, and international actors. With strong ties to partners in the Global South, the organization emphasizes collaborative approaches through research, dialogue, and advocacy. Their guiding principles are observation, analysis, and action.

The impacts of climate change—especially loss and damage—pose a growing threat to sustainable development and human well-being. Those least responsible for the climate crisis are often the ones most severely affected. Germanwatch is committed to advancing solutions that enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities and to ensuring that international support systems provide meaningful help. They engage in research, develop policy proposals, and participate in national and global dialogues alongside governments, civil society groups, and think tanks, with a focus on climate risk management, adaptation strategies, and equitable loss and damage solutions.

The new Policy Advisor will join the international climate policy team and take a leading role in coordinating a global project on climate risk financing for developing nations. This includes working closely with a core partner in Senegal, participating in strategic decision-making bodies, conducting joint activities during major climate events, and producing research related to adaptation and social protection frameworks. Additionally, the role involves contributing to a second project centered on national loss and damage mechanisms in Bangladesh and other Global South countries. Responsibilities in this area include event organization, collaboration with local partners, and the creation of materials tailored for varied audiences.

The advisor will also take part in civil society networks that address climate impacts, helping shape shared advocacy strategies with organizations from both the Global South and North. Engagement in global policy processes such as the UNFCCC negotiations (including COP30), ExCom meetings, and G7 summits will also be expected, particularly in relation to the Global Goal on Adaptation and financing mechanisms. Communicating research and recommendations through newsletters, briefings, social media, and blog posts will be a key part of the role, making complex policy issues accessible to a broader audience.

Ideal candidates will have a solid grasp of the global climate governance landscape, including key institutions and frameworks such as the UNFCCC and UNDRR. Experience in climate risk management, particularly in collaboration with civil society in developing regions, is highly valued. They should be skilled in managing multi-stakeholder projects and producing a range of written outputs—from in-depth policy papers to public-facing articles. A strong motivation to work in a dynamic and impact-driven NGO setting is important, and prior experience in climate advocacy or development cooperation would be an advantage. Fluency in English is essential, and while German is not required initially, a willingness to learn the language is expected due to its importance in the organization’s internal and external communications. Additional language skills are seen as an asset.

The position is offered at 60–80% (24–32 hours weekly), aligned with public sector pay in Germany, and is initially limited to 10 months, with the possibility of renewal.
