STIPENDS AVAILABLE: Apply for GOAL‘s NextGen Youth Programme for Young Changemakers
Applications are open for the NextGen Youth Programme organised by GOAL, an initiative that brings together young people from different parts of the world to explore issues related to global justice and strengthen their understanding of global citizenship. The programme is designed for motivated young changemakers who want to deepen their knowledge of the complex challenges facing the world today, particularly those related to climate change and health systems. Through collaborative learning and discussion, participants will engage with peers from various countries to reflect on these challenges and contribute ideas that can help raise awareness and inspire action. As part of the experience, participants will also work together to develop creative materials that will support GOAL’s public engagement and advocacy activities.
The 2025 edition of the programme will consist of ten sessions delivered mainly online, allowing participants from different countries to take part in a shared learning environment. For participants based in Ireland, two additional in-person sessions will also be organised. The programme will begin with an in-person gathering for Irish participants on May 23, followed by an online session for international participants on May 26. Subsequent sessions will take place online on several Thursdays between early June and mid-July, with an additional in-person retreat scheduled for Irish participants during the weekend of June 20 or 21, with final details to be confirmed. To accommodate the global group of participants, online sessions will begin at 3:00 PM Irish time, which corresponds to different times in participating countries including Uganda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Honduras and Colombia.
Throughout the programme, participants will engage in collaborative learning activities designed to build practical and personal skills. These include strengthening critical thinking abilities, improving intercultural communication, learning the basics of project management, and developing teamwork skills. The sessions will also introduce participants to the foundations of planning and delivering public awareness campaigns. By taking part, young people will gain a deeper understanding of how global systems are interconnected and how social, environmental and economic challenges affect communities in different ways. They will be encouraged to examine the structures that influence opportunity and participation in society while reflecting on their own role in addressing both local and international challenges. The programme also promotes dialogue rooted in empathy, inclusion and cooperation, helping participants build confidence, resilience and the courage to advocate for positive change. In addition, participants will gain insight into the work of GOAL and have opportunities to interact with members of the organisation’s team.
Eligible applicants must currently live in one of the participating countries, including Ireland, Ethiopia, Honduras, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, Colombia or Zimbabwe. Applicants should be between 18 and 25 years old, comfortable communicating in English, and able to attend the scheduled sessions between May and July. They should also be willing to collaborate with other participants between sessions and demonstrate an emerging awareness of social and global issues. The programme particularly encourages young people who show initiative and a commitment to making a positive difference in their communities, whether through volunteering, community events, educational activities or creative pursuits. Interest in artistic or creative forms of expression such as drama, art, writing, journalism or music is also welcomed. Access to a device and internet connection is helpful for participation, although those without reliable access may indicate this in their application so that support can be explored.
To apply, candidates are required to submit a CV or portfolio summarising their educational background as well as any voluntary or professional experience. Applicants must also provide either a written cover letter of approximately 500 words or a short two-minute video explaining their motivation for joining the programme. In their application, they should introduce themselves, explain why they believe the programme aligns with their interests and goals, highlight the skills and experiences they would bring to the group, and describe what they hope to gain from participating. Applicants choosing the video option must send the video separately by email together with their CV or portfolio, clearly indicating their name and country in the subject line.
The deadline for submitting applications is April 3, and selected participants will be informed of the results by May 2. Individuals who are not selected for the current cohort are encouraged to remain connected with the programme and consider applying again in future cycles.
The NextGen Youth Programme is committed to promoting inclusion and equitable access to global citizenship education. They encourage applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, including participants from different socio-economic contexts, people with or without disabilities, and applicants from all ethnic and cultural communities.
To support participation, selected participants will receive a stipend during the programme. This financial support is intended to help cover internet and data costs as well as any travel expenses that may arise during participation. Successful participants will receive a total stipend of €400 for the duration of the programme.
