Applications are now open for the 2025 University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, a prestigious initiative empowering the next generation of African change-makers. Building on its successful first phase, which supported 171 scholars, the program will provide 351 talented young individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa with access to high-quality education at UBC, fostering their growth as leaders and change-makers.
Upon graduation, these scholars will harness their knowledge and experience to drive economic growth, social transformation, and community development in Africa. The program focuses on four key areas:
1. Empowerment through Education: Providing access to quality education, tailored support, and wrap-around services to ignite transformative leadership in Africa.
2. Community-Driven Impact: Facilitating experiential learning through collaborations with diverse community partners, enabling students to address critical social and environmental issues.
3. Career Transition Support: Offering academic, social, and professional development programs to ensure a seamless transition into meaningful employment or entrepreneurship.
4. Leadership Development: Providing hands-on learning experiences, enriched training, and opportunities for growth, enabling scholars to develop their skills, agency, and voice.
Eligibility criteria include:
- Holding a Bachelor's degree
- Not possessing a graduate or PhD degree
- Being 35 years old or younger
- Being a citizen or refugee of a Sub-Saharan African country
- Demonstrating academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to community development
- Requiring a Canadian study permit
- Committing to returning to Africa to apply their skills and knowledge for the betterment of their communities
