Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the France–South Africa Scholarship Programme. This initiative is designed for students from South Africa, Lesotho, or Malawi who plan to pursue postgraduate studies—either at the master’s or doctoral level—at recognized higher education institutions in France. Those holding dual French nationality are not eligible. To qualify, applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1996, and must secure admission into a French academic institution within the relevant deadlines.

The scholarship supports study periods in France aligned with the time required to complete the respective academic programs. For master’s studies, the funding typically covers two years. However, in certain situations, such as when a student has an Honours degree, direct entry into the second year (M2) of the master’s program might be possible, though this depends entirely on the admission policies of the French host institution. Continued support into the second year will be contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in the first year, as verified by the French Embassy.

Doctoral candidates may receive funding for up to three years. However, the scholarship must be renewed annually, and this renewal depends on the candidate’s ability to demonstrate consistent progress in their research.

The application window targets students aiming to commence their studies in France in September 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be informed individually, and the final list of awardees, along with those placed on the waiting list, will be published in accordance with the program’s stated schedule. Due to high volumes of applications, follow-up inquiries from candidates will not receive responses.

Two funding options are available under this programme. The first is a fully funded opportunity provided by the French Embassy, which confers the status of a France Excellence scholar. This includes comprehensive health insurance coverage, prioritized access to student housing, a waiver of visa fees, advisory services from Campus France, and exemption from student life and campus fees (CVEC). Scholars may also be exempted from paying registration fees, provided their program is hosted at a public university overseen by the French Ministry of Higher Education and does not charge additional training costs. This package also includes a return airfare to France.

Monthly financial support is provided—approximately 850 euros for those in master’s programs and around 1700 euros for PhD students, though these amounts may vary annually. Scholars can also apply for housing assistance from the French government’s family allocation office (CAF), which usually provides around 150 euros monthly. However, tuition fees are generally not covered unless specific exceptions apply. Many affordable or low-cost programs are available throughout France, and applicants in need of guidance are encouraged to seek help from Campus France.
