FUNDED : Apply for the New Explorer Scholarship 2026

Applications are open for the New Explorer Scholarship 2026, a unique opportunity that offers one selected participant the chance to join an immersive marine expedition in the Dominican Republic. Organized by The Seabirds Foundation, the scholarship provides full participation in a week-long ocean research experience at the renowned Silver Bank Marine Sanctuary.

The program is designed for individuals who are passionate about the ocean, wildlife conservation, exploration, and environmental stewardship. Participants will have the opportunity to live aboard a research vessel, engage in citizen science activities, and observe humpback whales in their natural habitat.

About the Scholarship

The New Explorer Scholarship aims to make transformative ocean experiences accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their scientific training or previous expedition experience.

Set within the Silver Bank Marine Sanctuary, one of the world's most significant breeding grounds for humpback whales, the expedition combines marine research, conservation education, and hands-on field experiences.

Participants will spend seven days at sea, contributing to ongoing scientific efforts while gaining a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and ocean conservation.

Program Highlights

Selected scholars will have the opportunity to:

  • Spend a full week aboard a research vessel in the open ocean
  • Snorkel alongside wild humpback whales in their natural environment
  • Participate in citizen science and marine research activities
  • Contribute to acoustic monitoring and data collection projects
  • Learn about marine conservation and whale behavior
  • Connect with researchers, conservationists, and fellow ocean enthusiasts
  • Gain firsthand experience in field-based environmental research

Participant Responsibilities

Successful applicants will be responsible for covering:

  • Round-trip airfare to and from the Dominican Republic
  • Accommodation before or after the expedition, if required
  • Visa and passport expenses
  • Personal spending and incidental costs
  • Travel and medical insurance

Applicants who may face challenges covering airfare expenses are still encouraged to apply and explain their circumstances during the application process.

Expedition Experience

This is not a traditional tourism program. Participants should be prepared for an authentic expedition environment that includes:

  • Seven consecutive days at sea
  • Shared onboard living arrangements
  • Limited personal space
  • Variable weather and ocean conditions
  • Daily physical activity
  • Unpredictable wildlife encounters

The experience is designed to provide participants with a deeper connection to the natural world while fostering personal growth and environmental leadership.

Why Apply?

The New Explorer Scholarship offers more than a travel experience. It provides a rare opportunity to contribute to real-world marine research while developing a greater understanding of ocean conservation challenges and solutions.

Participants will return with practical knowledge, unforgettable experiences, and valuable insights that can inspire future environmental action within their communities, careers, and personal lives.

Individuals eager to explore the ocean, contribute to conservation efforts, and experience life aboard a research expedition are encouraged to submit their applications for this extraordinary opportunity.
