Applications have opened for the 2026 edition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Young Champions of the Earth initiative. Established in 2017, this program serves as UNEP’s leading platform for youth engagement, celebrating driven young innovators who are developing impactful solutions to safeguard and regenerate the planet. Since 2024, the initiative has been delivered with the backing of Chris Kemper in collaboration with Planet A.

Spearheaded by UNEP, the award highlights individuals aged 18 to 30 who are advancing practical responses to the three interconnected global environmental emergencies: climate change, the degradation of land and biodiversity, and the growing crisis of pollution and waste. Those selected are supported in expanding their projects through financial assistance, specialized training, personalized guidance, and international exposure across UNEP’s global communication platforms.

To qualify, applicants must fall within the 18–30 age bracket and demonstrate a minimum of six months of active involvement in their environmental initiative. Individuals who applied in previous years are permitted to submit a new application, provided they enter only once during the current cycle.

Young Champions are chosen from different regions of the world, and each recipient gains access to significant opportunities. They receive seed funding of US$10,000 to strengthen and scale their work, along with mentorship, capacity-building workshops, and entry into a global network of environmental leaders and experts. Awardees are also invited to exclusive events, including the official recognition ceremony, where they can expand their professional connections. In addition, they benefit from international visibility through media features, interviews, and speaking engagements. They also have the opportunity to participate in a competitive pitch process for a Planet A grant valued at up to US$100,000.
