The United Nations University Sustainability Scholarship for 2025 is now accepting applications from eligible and interested applicants.

The United Nations University Scholarship pays for all tuition and, for a maximum of 24 months, a living expense allowance of 130,000 JPY per month. It also covers travel and health insurance fees.

Utilising a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary methodology, the curriculum incorporates techniques and materials from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

The goal of the United Nations University Sustainability Scholarship program is to develop the future generation of scholars and policymakers who will lead international initiatives for a more sustainable future. Studying at UNU-IAS offers the special advantages of: cooperative study and real-world experience,

Program Benefits
The United Nations University Scholarships include the following:

**UNU Rector’s Scholarship**
The UNU Rector’s Scholarship covers the full tuition cost and provides a monthly living allowance of 130,000 JPY (subject to change) for up to 24 months. It also covers travel expenses to and from Japan with a fixed amount, along with a research allowance.

**Resona Bank Scholarship**
The Resona Bank Scholarship offers full tuition coverage and provides a monthly allowance of 130,000 JPY (subject to change) for living expenses for up to 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan are also covered with a fixed amount, and a research allowance is included.

**Japan Foundation for UNU (jfUNU) Scholarship**
The jfUNU scholarship offers a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY for up to 24 months as financial support. In some cases, tuition fees may be waived for recipients of this scholarship.

**Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP)**
This scholarship covers full tuition, a monthly subsistence allowance that includes a housing allowance, thesis research allowance, medical and accident insurance, and allowances for books and instruments.
For the 2022-23 academic year, the monthly subsistence allowance, including housing, is 147,000 JPY (subject to change).
An economy class airfare will also be provided for the most direct route from the scholar’s home country to Tokyo Narita International Airport.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for the 2024 United Nations University Scholarship:

To be eligible for the United Nations University Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

- Applicants must be from developing countries and demonstrate a need for financial support.
- Applicants residing in Japan on a working visa are not eligible.
- Applicants who are already enrolled in other postgraduate programs, including those who have completed a master’s degree at an institution other than UNU-IAS, are not eligible.
- Applicants cannot hold any other scholarships simultaneously.

For MSc Applicants:

To apply for the Master of Science in Sustainability, applicants must meet the following conditions by the application deadline:

- A completed bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university in a field related to sustainability, aligned with UNU-IAS thematic areas.
- A minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale (or 70% on a 100% scale) for the completed bachelor’s degree.
- Proof of English language proficiency.

For PhD Applicants:

To apply for the PhD in Sustainability Science, applicants must meet the following conditions by the application deadline:

- A completed master’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university in a field related to sustainability.
- At least two years of professional field experience relevant to UNU-IAS research themes, gained after obtaining a university degree (full-time equivalent).
- A minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale (or 70% on a 100% scale) for one of the master’s degrees obtained.
- Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS), waived for English-speaking applicants.
