FULLY FUNDED TO JAPAN: Apply for the Japanase Government MEXT Scholarship 2026 for undergraduate and research studies
Applications are currently being welcomed for the 2026 edition of the Japanese Government (MEXT) Teacher Training Scholarships. Offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), this program is designed for international educators who wish to pursue research in the field of school education at selected universities across Japan. Through this initiative, successful candidates are given the chance to deepen their expertise and experience in Japanese educational practices as part of a teacher training course.
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must be citizens of countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Japan. As a general guideline, candidates should have been born on or after April 2, 1990. Eligible individuals must hold a degree from a recognized university or a teacher training institution and have accumulated at least five years of professional teaching experience at primary or secondary schools, or teacher training colleges in their home countries, as of October 1, 2025. University-level teaching experience is not considered. While prior knowledge of Japanese is not required, participants must be open and committed to studying the language during their stay. Additionally, candidates must present a medical certificate, issued by a licensed physician, confirming that they are physically and mentally fit to participate in academic activities in Japan.
The scholarship duration corresponds to the length of the training program offered by the host university, commencing in October 2025 and concluding by March 2027. It is important to note that even if recipients arrive in Japan earlier, such as in September, the funding will officially begin in October. Extensions beyond this period are not allowed under the terms of the scholarship.
Successful applicants of the MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship will receive a monthly stipend of 143,000 yen after arriving in Japan. For those conducting their research or studies in designated regions, an additional regional allowance of 2,000 to 3,000 yen may be granted each month. However, this amount is subject to change depending on the Japanese government’s budget allocations each fiscal year. If a recipient is away from their university for an extended period, the scholarship payment may be suspended during that time.
The scholarship also covers all educational costs, including entrance examination fees, enrollment charges, and tuition at the host institution. Additionally, MEXT arranges and finances economy-class airfare from the recipient’s nearest international airport (typically in their country of nationality) to a designated airport in Japan that connects to their host university. Upon completing the training course, recipients who return home by the end of their scholarship term may also apply for a return ticket, which MEXT will provide.
