HYBRID EVENT : Be part of the Polar Argo Workshop 2026 in France – Apply now
Applications are open for the Polar Argo Workshop 2026, an international scientific gathering organized under the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Climate and Ocean Variability, Predictability and Change (CLIVAR) framework together with Euro-Argo ERIC.
The workshop will bring together oceanographers, climate scientists, engineers, data specialists, and polar researchers to explore advances in monitoring polar oceans and improving global climate observations.
Event Overview
- Event: Polar Argo Workshop 2026
- Dates: 18–19 June 2026
- Format: Hybrid (In-person + Online participation)
- Location: Plouzané, France
- Participation Fee: Free registration
- Registration Deadline: 1 June 2026
About the Workshop
Understanding polar oceans is essential for tracking changes in heat storage, freshwater circulation, and sea-level rise that influence the global climate system. Since 2001, Polar Argo floats have enabled scientists to collect critical ocean data even beneath seasonal sea ice.
Despite major progress, polar regions remain among the least observed areas of the global ocean. This workshop aims to advance scientific collaboration and technological innovation needed to expand polar ocean monitoring systems under the OneArgo vision.
Participants will exchange research findings, discuss technological solutions, and strengthen links between observation systems, modelling communities, and satellite missions.
Key Themes
The workshop will explore scientific and technical topics including:
- Polar ocean science and climate variability
- Arctic monitoring and marginal seas research
- Ocean circulation and climate interactions
- Advances in float technology and ice detection systems
- Data quality control and processing tools
- Integration with climate models and satellite observations
- Future deployment strategies for the Polar Argo array
Workshop Objectives
Participants will work toward:
- Strengthening monitoring of high-latitude oceans
- Reviewing scientific discoveries from existing Argo observations
- Improving under-ice positioning technologies
- Identifying observational gaps in polar regions
- Supporting future large-scale deployment of Polar Argo systems
Why This Opportunity Matters
Polar regions play a central role in regulating Earth’s climate, yet they remain significantly under-observed. The Polar Argo Workshop provides a rare platform for collaboration between science, technology, and climate policy communities working to improve global ocean knowledge and climate prediction capacity.
Don't miss out on the application deadline which is 1 June 2026 to secure attendance.
