Founded in 1983, TWAS was established by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, led by Abdus Salam, the Nobel laureate physicist from Pakistan. Their shared vision was that developing nations could address challenges like hunger, disease, and poverty by strengthening their expertise in science and engineering. The Academy received essential support from Italian scientists and political leaders from its inception.
Originally named the Third World Academy of Sciences, it was officially inaugurated in 1985, attended by United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. Initially, TWAS had 42 elected fellows, including nine Nobel laureates. The name was later changed twice: in 2004, to "The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World," and in 2012, to its current name, "The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries." Today, TWAS comprises 1,296 elected fellows, including some of the world's most accomplished scientists and engineers, representing over 100 countries, with 11 Nobel laureates among them. Approximately 84 percent of these fellows hail from developing nations, while the remainder are scientists from developed countries whose work has significantly impacted the global South. TWAS fellows form the cornerstone of the Academy's activities.
TWAS, in partnership with various organizations, offers more than 600 fellowships annually to scientists from the developing world pursuing doctoral degrees and postdoctoral research. It also presents prestigious prizes and awards for scientific contributions in the developing world. Furthermore, the Academy allocates nearly $1 million in research grants each year to individual scientists and research groups, supports visiting scientists, and provides funding for regional and international science conferences.

- TWAS covers the cost of international low-cost airfare and provides a subsistence contribution, which can reach a maximum of USD 300 per month. No additional expenses are covered by TWAS.
- The hosting institution is responsible for offering accommodation, meals, and access to research facilities.
- Fellowship awards are granted by the TWAS Fellowships Committee based on scientific merit.
- These fellowships are intended for research and advanced training and are available to young scientists who hold at least an MSc or an equivalent degree.
- Eligible applicants must be young scientists working in any field of the natural sciences. They should be citizens of a developing country and employed by a research institution in a developing country.
- There are no age restrictions. However, preference is given to young scientists who are in the early stages of their research careers, particularly those working in Least Developed Countries.
- Lists of potential host institutions categorized by field can be found on the official website. These lists serve as recommendations, but institutions not included are acceptable as long as they are located in a developing country.
- Institutions within the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China, are not eligible as host institutions for this program. Applicants interested in conducting a fellowship in China must verify if their chosen host institution is a CAS institute. - It's important to note that these fellowships are designed for South-South visits, meaning they support visits by researchers from developing countries to institutions in other developing countries.
- Applicants should be aware that they may apply for only one program per calendar year within the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants cannot visit another institution in the same year under the TWAS Visiting Professor programs, with one exception: the head of an institution inviting an external scholar to share expertise under the TWAS Visiting Professor programs may still apply for another program.
