Applications are now open for the CAPACITY Fellowship Programme at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), hosted in Bonn, Germany. This opportunity offers three fellowship placements within the Mitigation Division, specifically under the Markets and Non-Markets Support and Stakeholders Interaction Subdivision. The selected fellows will contribute to the advancement and implementation of key elements under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Applications must be submitted by 03 August 2025, with the aim of onboarding fellows as soon as possible. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of an extension for a second year, not exceeding two years in total.

The UNFCCC secretariat plays a central role in supporting the global response to climate change by facilitating the implementation of the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. Through its activities, it assists member states in delivering their commitments and advancing climate action. The CAPACITY Fellowship Programme, under this mandate, aims to strengthen institutional and professional capabilities within Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The programme is designed to enhance the skills of government-affiliated professionals through targeted training and exposure, helping them contribute more effectively to their home institutions and national climate strategies.

Successful candidates will be embedded in teams working on various aspects of Article 6, including regulatory frameworks, technical review processes, capacity-building strategies, and stakeholder engagement related to market and non-market approaches. Fellows will collaborate closely with UNFCCC experts and contribute to ongoing projects through research, policy development, digital tool creation, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder coordination. They will also help develop training materials, co-organize regional and global events, and participate in outreach activities that promote climate action and the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Throughout their fellowship, participants will be fully engaged as contributing members of their assigned units. They will receive ongoing mentorship, tailored guidance, and access to professional development resources. Their role will be dynamic, ranging from producing knowledge materials and supporting reviews, to contributing to policy analysis and implementation support related to carbon markets, carbon pricing, and Article 6 mechanisms.

Upon completion of the programme, fellows will leave with in-depth knowledge of climate governance, enhanced communication and digital skills, and the ability to navigate complex international negotiations and intergovernmental processes. They will have built strong professional networks across global, regional, and national levels and gained experience in project development, regulatory work, stakeholder engagement, and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Eligible applicants must be nationals of an LDC or SIDS country and must be currently working in a government institution at the national, regional, or local level. They must also be under 40 years of age by the application deadline. A postgraduate degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, international relations, economics, or development studies is required, along with at least three years of relevant work experience. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of another UN language is considered an asset.

Candidates will go through a selection process that may include technical assessments and interviews. Shortlisted individuals will be required to secure approvals from their employers confirming the relevance of the fellowship to their current roles and a commitment to return to their institution following the completion of the fellowship.

The monthly stipend for this opportunity is EUR 4,500, and the UNFCCC secretariat will cover travel expenses to and from Bonn. The programme is aimed at mid-level professionals and is not intended for students or individuals seeking support for academic degrees.
